Some more Yak outings
Been going to the Yak probably every two weeks or so on average for the past few months. Most outings resulted in at least a few fish (mostly whiteys and bows), but, up until last weekend, the weather and water temps were all over the place, making fishing mostly tough on the days I could make it. I've been fishing mostly in the farmlands area, with fish between 10" and 16" mostly on various nymphs, but went down to Umtanum in the canyon one weekend and stuck a nice 17" bow on a flashback PT nymph underneath a stonefly dropper in some deeper pocket water.
Last Sunday, I finally got some more predictable fishing around 1pm in the afternoon. Started above KOA and the fish were really keyed onto the stonefly nymphs in that section. Caught about a handful of whitefish, but also a couple of westslope cutts, 10" and 14" that gobbled up the stone imitation. A couple hours later, I headed to another spot below KOA. A decent BWO hatch came off, but not may risers -- except one. While I was nymphing a nice hole, I observed a decent size bow going crazy on the surface. I stuck on a P-Adams and on the second cast, a nice 15" bow took the offering w/o hesitation, and threw in a nice acrobatic jump for me. The first fish on the dry fly in a while. Other than that, I didn't see another riser. Makes me excited for more dry fly fishing to come as the weather warms up.
'Till next time,
Josh
